Pfizer, as a leading pharmaceutical company, was accused of illegally launching a drug that caused erectile dysfunction. Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, faced a growing public outcry after the company announced on July 30 that it would seek regulatory approval to sell Viagra, the first of its type of erectile dysfunction medication.
Pfizer CEO Martin Shkreli said: "The public should understand that the US FDA does not approve the sale of Viagra."
Shkreli said the FDA approval came after a study was published in the medical journal, that showed a majority of men between the ages of 40 and 70 who were taking Viagra, also called "Sildenafil."
The study, published in the medical journal, found a significant link between the drug and erectile dysfunction, while also causing sexual side effects, including erectile dysfunction that patients often experience during sexual activities.
The drug, which has not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, is intended for use in men only.
Viagra was first approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998, and was approved to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The FDA does not review the use of drugs under their own brand names. Pfizer will continue to follow up with regulators to ensure the safety of its products."
In a statement, a spokesperson for Pfizer said: "Pfizer is committed to ensuring that all patients have access to the medicines they need."
But he noted that the FDA has not yet made any progress in providing a generic version of Viagra.
"We expect to continue to work with other companies to address this issue and will seek regulatory approvals to ensure our products are safe for patients," he added.
Pfizer is facing lawsuits over its erectile dysfunction drug Cialis from various plaintiffs, including a man who has sued the company over his medical condition, saying that he developed erectile dysfunction before taking the drug, and that his wife had a history of sexually transmitted diseases.The company, which is based in Wilmington, Delaware, has already pleaded guilty to civil penalties and is expected to pay more than $2bn in criminal and civil costs.
