CHICAGO — In a bid to reduce the cost of prescription drugs, U. S. healthcare officials are looking for ways to limit the number of prescriptions filled.

The U. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it has begun its work to find a way to cut the number of prescriptions filled in Chicago by as much as 30 percent.

“This is a significant step in the right direction for the American people to take,” said Acting director Michael O’Leary, MD, the organization’s executive director. “These recommendations are an important step in changing what we call the drug industry’s behavior.”

The drug approval process is designed to find a way to cut costs for the federal government by 20 percent to 60 percent for prescription drugs.

government is currently seeking approval for two new drugs: Viagra for treating erectile dysfunction and the heart medication Revatio for treating pulmonary hypertension. The FDA has not yet decided when and if it will issue a final approval order for either drug.

For the drugs, the move will be based on a series of statements made at a meeting of the American Heart Association in Chicago, which is held this year. The drug approval was made public by the FDA in 2003.

“We’re taking a very proactive step by taking action in this matter and changing how we approach this issue,” said Tom Toth, president of the U. National Institute on Drug Development, which tracks drug approvals.

Toth is currently the chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Patient Care, which represents a growing number of patients in the United States.

“This is going to change how we think about drug approvals,” Toth said. “This will allow us to do what’s necessary to change how we treat our patients and provide our patients with the information that they need to make the right decisions.”

The FDA has been working closely with health care organizations around the country to develop and advance a national plan for the drug approval process.

Under the plan, a drug approval is required for more than 90 percent of prescriptions, with the goal of decreasing the overall prescription drug price by 20 percent to $1.4 billion.

The plan will depend on what the agency says will work best for the individual patient.

The FDA is expected to issue a final approval order for Viagra, Revatio and other drugs. The agency will also require that the drug approved be available in only 50, 100 and 200 milligram dosages.

Toth said the agency has not yet decided when and if the company will issue its final approval order.

He said the FDA will discuss how it will review the FDA’s recommendations and determine the best approach for the individual patient.

“It’s not just about a quick fix,” Toth said. “It’s about getting the drug that’s right for them.”
